Senior Seminar in Linguistics

LINGUISTICS 495

This course provides students with training and exposure to modern syntactic theory beyond Ling 309 (Syntactic Analysis). Students are familiarized with novel empirical phenomena along with current formal tools used in analyzing these phenomena. The course focuses on the syntax of questions across the world's languages and touches on the interaction of the grammar of questions with interpretation (question semantics), and usage-in-context (question pragmatics). Beyond further training in how to formally analyze natural language syntax, students will become familiar with how syntax interfaces with semantics and pragmatics, and implement this understanding in natural language analysis. Prerequisite: 309 Syntactic Analysis
Course Attributes: EN S; AS SSC; FA SSC; AR SSC
