Senior Seminar in Linguistics: Metrical Stress Theory

LINGUISTICS 495

Humans are remarkably adept at understanding spoken language-parsing a continuous acoustic stream into discrete linguistic elements in near real-time, even when encountering a speaker for the first time or in a noisy or distracting environment. The incredible speed, accuracy, and resilience with which we accomplish this complex task have long fascinated linguists and psychologists. In this seminar, we will explore both historical perspectives and current, state-of-the-art approaches to understanding this incredible human feat. Prerequisite: Ling 312 or permission of the instructor.
